Award's Assembly at Fremont Elementary

This morning was the Award’s Assembly at school!

HOPE OF AMERICA AWARD given by Sunset City Mayor and Kiwanis Club President to Mallory (with  Erin)

HOPE OF AMERICA
The first award they did was the “Hope of America” Award. This award is given to the top 6th grade students at school from the Kiwanis Club who display leadership qualities. Mallory received this award from the Sunset City Mayor who is also the Kiwanis Club President for Northern Davis County. Mallory, Emmalee Slater, Kaylee Cardenas and Janeth Ameda received the award—all girls. Mallory’s teacher had told me she would be receiving this award three weeks ago so I could plan to be there. They had the parents come up and have our pictures taken when they gave the presentation. It was really neat! Mallory lead the Pledge of Allegiance in the assembly also.

MALLORY
Mallory received the following awards in the assembly:
·         -Hope of America
·         -Top Math Student in her class
·        - Davis Decathlon Participant
·        - Student Council 2015-2016
·         -Library Assistant Service Award
·         -Trophy for Davis County Math Olympiad participant

Mallory also received a class award of being the best writer in her class. I guess she got 29/30 on her Final State Writing Assessment!

Hayley was also called up as the 2016-2017 Student Council!!

BRITTNEY
Brittney received the following award in the assembly:
·        - Top Math Student in her class

After the Award’s Assembly, 2nd grade had their own trophy ceremony for all those who read 100 hours during the school year (which entails reading 25-30 minutes per night all school year). Brittney was so excited to get her trophy! She ended up turning in reading logs for over 140 hours but I know she read a lot more than that! Way to be Brittney B!!!

Real Monarch's Game

After school, we hurried and got ready to go to the Salt Lake Monarch’s game (the semi-pro soccer team) at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy. We rode down with our friends, Danielle, Abigale, Preslie and Adalynn (Scott and Alan didn’t come since it was bishopric night). It was raining the whole way down. We brought coats, gloves, umbrellas, and blankets plus sandwiches and stuff to eat for dinner before going into the stadium. Brittney and Preslie’s team were able to be the “Dream Team” and walk the players out on to the field. Luckily, it stopped raining while we sat in the car eating. It did start sprinkling again about halfway through the game for about 10 minutes. After the game, the Monarch players came and signed the girl’s shirts and scarves (Brittney’s coach has connections) plus we stayed and got more signatures. I think the girls got about 12 signatures plus the mascot “Theo” to sign their things. We didn’t get home until 10:30 but it was a fun night and worth the loss the sleep.

Sunday in St. George

Today the girls and I went to church with Darinda and Stacey's family. We kind of surprised them at church- we didn't tell them we were coming. Scott got sick last night-- everything has finally caught up with him so he stayed back at the hotel.

This afternoon, the girls and I went to the St. George Temple and visitors center.

We also went to the Brigham Young winter home and had a great time. Mallory loved taking pictures for us. We learned some interesting thing.

Here is our favorite little eight year old practicing the piano before school. Brittney likes to get up early, read for 30 minutes, and practice her piano before school. Her she is, glasses and all, practicing. She is becoming quite the good little piano player-- she takes it pretty seriously!

Brittney's Field Trip

I was able to go with Brittney on a field trip to Ott Planetarium at Weber State University. It was a lot of fun! I may or may not have closed my eyes a lot during the star show--a reclined chair with the lights out is a bad combination for this momma!

Ear Piercing Day

Today was the day! I took Mallory, Hayley and Brittney to the mall to get their ears pierced at Claire's. They had each received $30 along with their coupon from Santa to use to get their ears pierced. They all decided to go with a basic package and then buy a set of earrings with the rest of their money. Their was a great excitement in the air!

Hayley went first. They all got to hold a little bear--just incase they were a little scared! They all did great! No one cried or even said "ouch"!

Next was Brittney's turn! She said it hurt until they put the solution on to clean them after!

Mallory was last! She was too cool to hold the bear the right way! Haha! One of the ladies got her gun stuck on Mallory's ear and had to press the trigger again to get it off! I didn't get a picture because I was a little worried for a minute!

They girls love their new look! They keep asking if they look different and if it is ok to turn them again. I told them to turn them as much as they like! It was a pretty exciting day! A great Christmas present!

Brittney's Math Problems

Each month, Mrs. Fong, the Math Coach at my girl's school, has a problem of the month for each grade. The other day Brittney was diligently working on two story problems-- one was for her grade (2nd) and the other was the 3rd grade problem. I took a picture of her work to solve the problem. Kids have so many creative ways that they understand and do math-- as parents, we were taught to allow them to solve problems whichever way makes sense to them! Her is a second grader's way of solving the following problems:

The Problem

The Solution- page 1

The Solution- page 2

Problem #2

Solution #2

Pretty amazing huh!

Each month, the girls earn tickets for the problems they are able to solve and then there is a big math store with some pretty neat prizes (it's not just candy and pencils-- the girls have bought stuffed animals, games, alarm clocks, etc.).

Good Job Mathematician Brittney!

Brittney's Lunch with the Mayor

Brittney was able to go to “Lunch with the Mayor”. Once a month, six kids are chosen to go from their school to go. They are chosen by picking out one of the students “Falcon Five Slips”. The students earn "Falcon Fives" for listening to the teacher, being kind and helpful to others, being respectful, etc. This month, Brittney's name was drawn.

She rode to the city building in a police car, ate pizza and soda, got her picture taken with the Mayor, and rode back to the school in the police car. She was so excited to go and they gave her a “goodie bag” with lots of fun things—a frisbee, pencil, stickers, erasers, notebook, etc.

WAY TO GO BRITTNEY!

Brittney's First Reader's Theater in 2nd Grade

Brittney performed her first Reader's Theater today in 2nd grade. She and her reading group performed "Haunted" by Shel Silverstein.
Each group did a wonderful job! After each group had performed their reader's theater, the whole 2nd grade sang, "I Like Being Me". They all sang their little hearts out! I love this song and it's message (I used to sing this song with my kindergartner's back in the day).

Here are the words of the song:

I like being me
And my friends help me see
I'm somebody special
Happy as can be
I feel good inside
When I do what's right
I help my friends and family
I like being me

Great job Brittney B!

A little post written by our Sister-in-Law Dawn Ropelato

Today, I read my sister-in-law's blog post on her blog. She entitled it "Feeling the Spirit". She wrote about Brittney's baptism on Saturday and I wanted to preserve the memory on my own blog so I totally cut and pasted what she wrote (I asked permission first).

FEELING THE SPIRIT
I know I don't always post about everyone's baptism but I had many thoughts today and wanted to share.  Today Brittney was the only child being baptized but the Chapel was almost as full as it is on Sundays.  There were so many family and friends there to show their love and support to Brittney and her family.  I felt the spirit so strong just walking in the Chapel.  Most of my kids were there and the few that weren't were working.  I love how supportive our family is...even extended family.  I felt the spirit a few more times before Brittney was actually baptized....I love feeling the spirit and having it testify to me that things are true and right.  When Scott was ready to baptize his baby the spirit over came him and filled the entire room where everyone was tightly together.  It was awesome watching Scott perform this sacred ordinance.

I had been thinking of Scott lately and a few times I was able to be there for him.  One time when Scott was single and lived by himself he got really sick.  I can't remember what was wrong but he came and stayed at our house so that I could help him.  I know I didn't do much for him but it sure made me feel good that he trusted me to come to our house.  I do remember him calling my name during one of the nights because he was experiencing heart burn or something like that.  I do think I knew what to do and how to help him that time.  It was a privilege to me to take care of Scott.  Then when Scott and Erin were married he asked me if I would sit in the "mother" chair that was reserved for his mom since Donna hadn't been endowed.  I was so honored to be there for him.  I love Scott and his darling little family.  I met Scott when he was still little and have watched him grown into an awesome man.

Scott was just called to serve as the Bishop of his ward a few weeks ago.  That calling says a lot about a person and I will have him and his family in my prayers because it is not an easy calling at all. I know Erin and his girls will be very supportive because they are all so wonderful.  Erin has had many leadership callings and has been prepared to support her hubby.  They will all do a good job because they always strive to do what is right and they are a close family.

Our family sure does love this family.  We enjoyed camping with them at Cherry Hills a few years back and we also enjoy having them join us for our Thanksgiving Celebrations.   I love their cute girls who all love taking care of the little babies and are really good at sports.  Fun Family!

***there was a little discussion in Scott's back yard of the proper way to say Ropelato.  I have always thought it was funny that it is pronounced differently by the family. ☺

Brittney's Soccer Team

Brittney is on a new soccer team this fall. She is playing with the Outlaws. She has a great coach and a really good friend from our ward on her team and she has made some new friends. Her team practices at the Weber County Fairgrounds and their home field is in Harrisville. We have played several teams from Layton. Tonight we played a team and Brittney scored our lone goal!
Way to go B!

(Don't you just love their colorful uniforms!)
